What’s one of your strongest memories of a museum or exhibition from your childhood?
My parents taking me to the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park. I fell in love with the planetarium as well as the Steinhart Aquarium. As I walked through the old complex just prior to it’s closing in 2003, I could still feel the echo of my childhood enthusiasm.
What first attracted you to a career in the museum field?
Prior to entering the museum field, I spent many years building a variety of successful for-profit ventures. At the same time, I had always held a deep interest in cultural organizations and their intrinsic value to the community. I decided that I wanted to transfer my business skills, particularly in management, marketing and organizational development to help museums and related institutions to become more stable, vital organizations.
What roles have you served within cultural organizations?
As an independent consultant, my role has been as a guide and facilitator of the planning process.
What sorts of projects have you been involved with within the museum community?I’ve advised, coordinated and produced a range of management, feasibility, marketing and development plans. However, my experience isn’t limited to planning. I’ve worked on a large variety of projects including the development and implementation of a complex visitor evaluation study on behalf of one of the world’s largest zoological gardens. I’ve also created educational content and public programming documents, raised funds for public programming initiatives, catalogued a major museum collection, and developed strategic plans and feasibility studies. As the Director of Museum Services for Butterfield’s Auctioneers, I conceptualized and implemented highly successful auctions on behalf of numerous museums.
What’s a personal goal you have with regard to museum consulting?
It’s simple: To shape the museum community’s sustained viability and stability through the development and implementation of superior strategic plans.
Name an exhibition that you have seen that stands out in your mind.
The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum permanent exhibition. Viewing the collection is awe-inspiring on many levels: the speed with which mankind has progressed technologically over the past century; the raw courage of the individuals who pioneered air and space travel; and the simple beauty of the collection.
